Life of Pika: A Science-Based Video Game by EarthGamesUW
Life of Pika is a runner game by EarthGamesUW in which players direct pikas to collect flowers for food as they dodge predators and avoid overheating. The structure of Life of Pika was inspired by games such as Frogger, Crossy Road, and Sonic the Hedgehog, however this game is unique in that the player’s vulnerability is displayed by a temperature bar.
Increased temperature has a negative impact on the pika. As a result, players must prioritize between remaining in shaded areas with lower temperatures and scurrying to collect food in sunny areas with higher temperatures. With each new level, the ambient temperature increases making the game play more difficult. With all of these factors combined, we aim to simulate the detrimental impact of climate change on pikas.
Our game incorporates science facts about pikas and the impacts of climate change in a way that is accessible and fun. During the game, the player is immersed into the world of pikas and exposed to the increasingly difficult conditions pikas struggle to survive in. As a result, we aim to promote empathy between the player and the pikas’ struggle against climate change. We hope that the player will become more thoughtful about their impact on the world and its inhabitants.
This type of outreach is critical for pikas in our natural world. For instance, one third of the pika population residing between the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada have disappeared in the last few decades.
With your support we will be able to complete the Life of Pika project! We will be able to pay a professional game designer, Samuel Dassler, to work alongside the existing team to perfect the initial build that was written by EarthGames students. Your support will help us implement more obstacles and levels, expanding the two levels in the current build into 7 in the finished product. We will also create a science facts section, teacher guides, and student guides for the game. This will provide a player with the opportunity to learn more about the pika’s struggle with climate change and make the game classroom ready.
We've already released 5 EarthGames to the App Stores: A Caribou's Tale, Erode Runner, Infrared Escape, Climate Quest and EcoTrivia: Save the Animals. Our games have been downloaded over 7000 times and have won national awards. We know we have the skills and ability to complete this game -- we just need your help to get it completed!
This project currently has no updates.
