Help Launch UW's Student-Built Experimental Rocket!


The Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion (SARP) is a team of student engineers at the University of Washington working to develop hybrid rocket technology. Our goal is to apply engineering fundamentals and theory along with hands on experience to design,construct, and launch an advanced hybrid rocket. This year we are competing in the Spaceport America Cup, conducted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA), in New Mexico. We are looking to raise $10,000 to cover the cost of the materials and testing for the rocket, and also to allow as many aspiring rocket engineers travel to the final competition as possible, come June.




SARP is competing in the first ever Spaceport America Cup, hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association. We will be competing in the advanced student researched and developed hybrid category (the most rigorous category). The rocket will be launched to 30,000 feet and deploy a rover payload which will then land and be controlled remotely. The launch system will be recovered separately. In addition to the Spaceport America Cup, we will be conducting a test launch in Brothers, WA.


The budget is broken up into the sub-team (a) and technical (b) layouts seen above. The funds raised from this campaign go toward:

  • Purchasing the materials used to build the rocket itself
  • Cover manufacturing for high quality, critical components
  • Travel expenses, including getting to the competition and test sites, as well as housing as the competition
  • Test equipment to allow us to continue to improve the rocket for the future




Launch Objectives

  1. Study the performance and flight characteristics of the hybrid motor by observing combustion chamber pressure and chamber wall temperature, as well as acceleration and trajectory during flight.
  2. Prove reusability through safe recovery and re-launching of the launch vehicle for development of a reliable scientific payload launch vehicle.
  3. Provide an opportunity for students to design advanced systems, perform engineering analysis, and conduct scientific experiments for the advancement of launch technology, and the development of skills critical to today’s scientists and engineers.




Our Team


SARP is composed of four different technical teams.

  • Propulsion: develops the hybrid motor, researches new designs for an optimal motor structure, develops highly-efficient hybrid fuels.
  • Structures: designs, constructs carbon fiber body structures and fiberglass nose cone.
  • Recovery: builds parachute deployment system to bring the rocket home safely, designing of redundant and ultra-safe systems to maximize the reusability.

  • Avionics: builds the deployable rover along with the electronics to monitor our rocket during flight.

All design, analysis, and manufacturing is performed by the students. We follow the engineering process for building our rocket from start to finish, meaning our students see the rocket both on the drawing board and on the launch rail.


Why Build a Hybrid Rocket?
Safer and More Affordable, yet Underdeveloped

Compared to solid- and liquid-fueled rockets, hybrids have several advantages:

  1. Simpler and typically more reliable than liquid rockets as there is only one liquid propellant, resulting in less plumbing and weight.
  2. Safer than solid rocket motors because the oxidizer and fuel remain separated until launch, reducing the risk of detonation or premature ignition.
  3. Significantly lower cost and toxicity, with wider availability.

Hybrids represent one of the most undeveloped rocket technologies compared to liquids and solids. Our design capitalizes on the simplicity of hybrid motors as well as their inexpensive propellants, providing us with a reliable testing and research platform. The Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion aims to research and develop advanced rocket propulsion systems like hybrids, both to enhance the education of its student members and to advance aerospace rocket technologies.

Hybrid motors are an alternative high energy propulsion system that holds the potential to send humans to space. Hybrids are already being developed to take tourists to the edge of space and people into low earth orbit. There are huge breakthroughs being made in the field of hybrid technology -- this is the future of rocketry. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us in this outstanding campaign. Within only four days we managed to raise $10,000! Due to this great success, we have decided to extend our goal out to $15,000. This additional money will go directly to allowing more members to attend the final competition in New Mexico, and ensure as many students get to see the final rocket launch as possible.


Manufacturing In Progress!

Since beginning the campaign, we have begun manufacturing our oxidizer tank! This is a pressure vessel designed and machined by the student members on the propulsion team. We will eventually send out the tank for welding and heat treatment and then begin testing. Pictured is Charlie Yang, propulsion team member.
