Welcome to Peter Moran's Personal Fundraising Page!

Now's the time to support this innovative program for our young men of color—especially our Black and Brown brothers, sons, friends—as they embark on their lives as UW students in an environment that is often less than welcoming.

African-American, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander, and Southeast Asian men often face greater obstacles to success at the University of Washington than many of the other students in their freshmen cohort. Along with financial obstacles, many Black and Brown young men are the first in their families to attend college. They have less familiarity with the culture of college, and the life skills that will best serve them as entering students. As the Director of Study Abroad at UW, I know that young men are much less likely than their female counterparts to take part in international education opportunities, and this is even more true for our male students of color. How can we best encourage our students to see all pathways open to them rather than closed doors? And how can we overcome the real barriers to participation in all aspects of student life that persist? The Brotherhood Initiative is a powerful example of what we can do. The Initiative is all about creating a sense of community, empowerment, and support for our young brothers as they enter UW—so that their time here is successful in every sense. This means enhancing academic and communication skills, offering personal and leadership growth opportunities, and promoting overall wellness. Being directly involved in the Brotherhood Initiative Steering Committee is one of the best experiences I have had at UW, and I know we can do so much more.

The Brotherhood Initiative is just finishing its very first year—help us continue its great work, and support our young Black and Brown men as they begin their college lives!! Thank you!

The Brotherhood Initiative Fall Leadership Summit will be a high impact leadership and learning experience.  This last year we welcomed our first cohort of freshman males of color into a new program that is designed to support them throughout their entire time at UW and help them in navigating the university as well as understanding the complexities of intersecting identities and to eliminate institutional barriers for males of color.

For 2017-18 we are designing a program to focus on leadership for the continuing sophomore males of color as well as to welcome in a new cohort of freshman undergraduates.  Our Fall Leadership Summit will be a key program in setting a foundation for support, team cohesion, and common goals that will ensure success.

Our stretch goal for this fundraiser is $10,000 which will cover all of our expenses.  We are setting our realistic goal at $6,000, but we welcome you to give big!!  Our cost breakdown is below.

Program summary:

Day 1:  Sophomore launching:  Welcome back for the first cohort of Brotherhood Initiative males of color as they enter their second year of college and support them in critical reflection of their first year as well as creating a strong academic plan and setting professional and personal goals for their sophomore year of college.

Night 1:  Leadership Development:  We will be preparing this sophomore cohort to welcome the incoming freshman cohort and to have a peer-to-peer mentorship matching.

Day 2:  Welcoming the new cohort:  The sophomore cohort will help design the welcome program for the freshman cohort.

Night 2:  Passing the torch:  the sophomore cohort will depart after dinner and the new Freshman cohort will do team building activities

Day 3:  Setting goals for freshman year and beyond and go home
