The Xavier Engle Spirit Award and the Class of 2016

When we began thinking about what we wanted to support for our senior class gift, a name came to mind almost immediately: our classmate Xavier Engle. In November 2014, we lost him in a tragic kayaking accident.

After he passed away, the Xavier Engle Spirit Award was established to benefit an Alaska WWAMI student who embodies the same values that Xavier did in his all-too-brief life. Awards like this help provide much-needed support for medical students struggling with the steep cost of tuition and reduce students’ heavy debt loads. They really help!

We want to strengthen and build the Xavier Engle Spirit Award so that his memory lives on through the students who will benefit from it. What better way to keep Xavier’s memory alive than to have a student receive the Engle Award every year for decades?

Please join our effort to raise money for Xavier’s fund by May 25, 2016. And thank you very much for honoring his life and legacy.

Your Gift Will Be Matched

Paul G. Ramsey, CEO, UW Medicine, and dean of the UW School of Medicine, has agreed to match every donation, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. Now is a wonderful time to give.

About Xavier

Xavier was brilliant, determined and kind. He loved all kinds of outdoor adventure, and he was an accomplished kayaker who had braved many rivers worldwide. He loved life and lived it to the fullest at every opportunity.

Xavier finished high school in Anchorage early and traveled to language school in Chile, spending the next three years traveling, working and kayaking in Peru, Uganda and Russia. He attended Dartmouth College, receiving a scholarship, and he spent a semester at the prestigious London School of Economics. Xavier worked at the Hitchcock Hospital near Dartmouth and accepted a fellowship after graduation to work at the Centers for Disease Control virology lab, where he met his life partner, Kaitlyn.

Together, Xavier and Kaitlyn were accepted to the WWAMI program at the UW School of Medicine. Xavier’s goal was to become a surgeon and return to Alaska — and to work abroad and volunteer with Doctors Without Borders.

“Xavier had an unbelievable ability to pack his days completely full and yet still do everything, including school, extremely well,” remembers Kaitlyn. We remember his smile and the gentle word he had for everyone, and he inspires us to this day.

The Xavier Engle Spirit Award

The WWAMI program was created to help educate physicians who will serve their home states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Xavier — who intended to return to Alaska after his training — was a perfect example of what the WWAMI program hopes to accomplish.

According to Jane Shelby, M.D., Alaska WWAMI’s assistant dean of the foundation phase, the Xavier Engle Spirit Award was created “to recognize exceptional students in the Alaska WWAMI program, those who exhibit academic excellence and also excel in other areas of life.”

Adinda Demske, the 2015 recipient of the award, was inspired by Xavier’s memory. “Xavier was clearly talented, motivated, and accomplished,” she says. “While those traits are impressive, it was how he went about life that is especially admirable. . . his spirit and joy of life are characteristics to remember and honor, aspirations for me moving forward.”

A week to go!

Published on Thursday, May. 19, 2016 at 11:17 PM (PST)

Because of the incredible leadership of some wonderful classmates, our friends, and our families, we have already smashed through our initial fundraising goal of $2,500 and our stretch goal of $5,000. That’s why we decided to set a new goal of $7,500 ($15,000 with Dr. Ramsey’s match which is the number you see on this page), fully confident that with the support of our class that we will be able to hit that out of the park too. Here’s why we’re so sure: only 17% of our class has participated in this effort so far. The class of 2015 had a 30% participation rate. We know we can do better than that with such a worthy cause to rally around!

With just a week before hooding, time is of the essence. Dr. Ramsey’s continues to match all contributions made until 5:00 pm on May 25th (up to $10,000).

An additional $15,000 for the Xavier Engle Spirit Award guarantees that his memory will continue to resonate with kindhearted and whip-smart medical students for years to come.
