UW: Arnold Air Society
The Douglas Matheson squadron has a three-pillar mission: develop leadership skills, serve the community, and network with other cadets, officers and around our community. NATCON is an outstanding opportunity to combine all of these.
At NATCON, cadets will take part in business sessions during the day which discuss legislation for AAS and ROTC as a whole. Recently, cadets at NATCON initiated a change allowing rated cadets to wear the flight duty uniform immediately upon being categorized. In addition to business sessions, cadets attend a formal banquet dinner and each table hosts a general officer (active or retired) or another distinguished guest, giving the cadets an amazing networking opportunity. There is also a social for cadets and attendees to intermingle in a less formal environment as well as breakout sessions during the day to provide leadership guidance and think tank sessions for each position within an Arnold Air Squadron.
NATCON has been an absolutely invaluable experience for all us who have gone, and this year we are hoping to bring our largest group yet! With the addition of 15 new candidates, DMS doubled in size this January. With all of our new momentum and motivation, we are excited to see how much of an impact we can make in the community.
Miscellaneous serves to help out cadets who may need assistance with purchasing food while traveling and any emergency costs which might (but hopefully won't) occur.
This past weekend, sixteen of our cadets were fortunate enough to travel to Dallas, TX for the 2016 Arnold Air Society NATCON! According to C/3C Andis, "I was impressed by the fact I had personal interactions in a somewhat laid back state and met and communicated with both active and retired generals. The opportunity to meet cadets from other detachments and collaborate learning about other detachments and the way they are set up leadership wise was very insightful. Lastly, the ability to spend time with POC in an environment where they were able to impart leadership skills and thoughts outside of UW ROTC was conducive for a positive trip and learning experience". This weekend of networking, leadership development, and airpower was enjoyed by all; let us continue to support our cadets by reaching that fundraising goal!
