UW's 2016 Alternative Spring Break with the Pipeline Project
Welcome to Ashley Alday's Personal Fundraising Page!
Please support my team as we travel to Omak, Washington in hopes of impacting the minds of young individuals!
3 years ago, when I was just a baby freshman, my life was impacted with just one single trip - Alternative Spring Break with the Pipeline Project!
In just one trip, I am able to meet AMAZING groups of UW students, grow as a leader, expand my knowledge on a community I once knew nothing about, and develop relationships with the some the greatest students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Not only that but I get to do what I love most - hearing stories of resilient individuals while inspiring youth to reach their fullest potential!
Every year, I come back more excited than the last and as a graduating senior, I’m sad/excited for my last ASB trip as an undergrad. Without the support from people like YOU, these trips wouldn’t have been possible for the many undergraduates participating in this wonderful experience.
If you would like to support our journey, please feel free to make a gift on my fundraising page!
Thank you for your support!
About Alternative Spring Break:
Pipeline Project Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is an education outreach
program in which teams of UW students work on week-long literacy arts and
environmental science projects with K-12 students in rural and tribal communities
in Washington. With the guidance of UW students, K-12 students write,
illustrate, and bind their own picture books, or explore the natural world
through hands-on educational and scientific experiences, fostering curiosity
and appreciation for the environment.
This year, 60 UW students will spend spring
break helping almost one thousand
youth in rural towns publish their own books and
conduct scientific explorations. We will work with elementary,
middle, and high school students at 10 different sites: Brewster, Curlew,
Forks, Harrah, La Push, Long Beach, Mattawa, Omak, Oroville and Tonasket. We
are fundraising to keep ASB free for all participants!
Environmental Education ASB:
During the Environmental Education ASB, students explore environmental science
concepts through interactive lesson plans facilitated by UW students. Previous
lesson plans have included students role playing the challenges of salmon
swimming upstream, learning about the life cycle of a plant by planting seeds,
and conducting experiments to test water quality.
Take a look at the Environmental Education ASB blog!
Literacy Arts ASB:
During the Literacy Arts ASB program, children
come up with an idea for a book, write a rough draft, edit the draft, and
create a final, hard cover book. The young students illustrate their
published book and present it at a reading event at the end of the
week. The writing project encourages young writers to talk about themselves, their
values, goals and dreams for the future. Check out a video of Literacy Arts ASB!
Help us make Alternative Spring Break a Reality!
We need to cover all the program expenses so UW and K-12
participants are not constrained by a program fee. We need YOUR help to make
ASB possible!
We need
to raise $10,000 by March 10th, 2016.
These funds will be used to purchase classroom materials for our K-12
participants, and to provide transportation (rental vans and gas) and food for
UW students. Thanks to the teachers and schools who arrange week-long
homestays, our UW students have free lodging.
Here's our 2016 budget for our program that reaches almost 1000 K-12
students and 60 UW students:
Travel
$3500 (12 vans and 2 cars: rental and
milage)
Tshirts $500 (for 60 UW Pipeline students)
Food
$5500 ($18/day/per
60 UW participant/6 days)
Book Making Supplies $500 (Materials for children to make their own books)
Science Supplies $1000 (Materials for environmental education projects)
Final Magazine
$5000 (To publish
magazines of stories for 700 kids)
TOTAL
$16,000
Our goal here is to raise $10,000 of the 16,000 we need to fund this
program!
Quotes from UW
Participants:
"I believe in empowering the next generation to create positive and sustainable change in our world." --Environmental ASB Participant |
"The
highlights of ASB was when a student came up to me and said, "You
inspired me to go to college." It was priceless and a moment I'll never
forget!" --Literacy Arts ASB Participant |
Teachers talk about hosting the UW ASB students
in their classrooms:
"We loved this project!!" |
“My students were exposed first-hand to college students who love science. The idea that one might pursue a career in the area of science becomes real when college students are in the room.” --6th grade teacher, Brewster |
Our Partner Sites:

We have such an incredible community of friends, family, ASB alumni, and UW community members! We are 94% of the way to our goal and confident we will meet it. It means so much to all of us and the schools and kids we work with to have all of your support!
It's been great to hear from ASB alumni about why they donated to support this year's ASB! Here's what Meghan, who did ASB 14 years ago, had to say:
"I was on the 2002 team at Harrah Elementary. I consider
my experience with ASB one of my most memorable at UW. I'm now a Nurse
Practitioner at Swedish, and ASB was definitely a formative experience that
propelled me down the social justice/community outreach/health care track. I'm
so glad to see the program is going strong!"
Thank you everyone!
We're getting close: 3/4 of the way there! We have 8 days left to reach our goal!
USEED granted us a 2 day extension of our campaign, so we have one week left to reach our goal!
We know that the kids at our partner schools are getting excited for our arrival! We appreciate your help in our last push to get there!!
We are so impressed by how our community has come out to support Alternative Spring Break! We have 100 supporters already! Thank You so much for believing in us and in this project! Were about 60% of the way there!
Here at the UW, we've been busy preparing for ASB:
The Environmental ASB group has been meeting weekly and is currently finishing up the curriculum we'll use in the classroom.
And the Literacy Arts Alternative Spring Break group had our second training on Tuesday, and are very excited to get started making books with kids:
Please help us spread the word so we can reach our goal!
Wow, It's day 3 of our campaign and it's going great! We are almost 20% of the way to our goal!!
We so appreciate your support for ASB. Thank you for believing in our project!
Take a look at how your donation makes an impact: A donation of $100 is enough to fund transportation for a team of 5 students to travel to one of our partner schools such as Brewster, Curlew or Toppenish. Thanks again for your support, and please help us by spreading the word!
