Until recently, the team had only competed every other year, but beginning at the European International Submarine Races (eISR) in 2014, UW HPS began competing every year. We have subsequently seen a drastic increase in both team performance and student interest.

Our Story

Over the past few years, the team has nearly doubled in size and its competitive performance has increased dramatically. At the 2015 International Submarine Races (ISR), we set a new UW record at 6.01 knots (placing 2nd in the male-piloted category) and our female pilot set a school record of 5.44 knots (placing 1st for women; a mere 0.06 knots from the ISR World Record).

Despite limited resources and workspace, our team of dedicated engineering students accomplished UW's best performance ever in competition. This year, the team is expanding, working in a new space provided by the UW Applied Physics Lab, and setting its sights on the world speed records.

Our Future

Our total fundraising goal for the year is $35,000.

Before the school year began, we knew we were going to have to raise a lot of money if we wanted to see our sub win on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, we are about $17,000 away from our goal, and we hope that this USEED campaign will take us most of the way there! The sidebar on the right describes a few of the ways we will be utilizing the money you help us raise.

Hull form optimization of our one-person submarine is our main goal for eISR 2016.

Rendering of our two-person hull to be raced at ISR 2017, built in collaboration with the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

We plan to advance the UW Human Powered Submarine Team by:

  1. Growing in a sustainable manner by recruiting ambitious new members and securing funding for team activities
  2. Developing world-class engineers through hands-on experience
  3. Taking our dedicated team to eISR in Gosport, England this summer
  4. Winning eISR and breaking the human-powered submarine world speed record

Who We Are

UW HPS is a team of 43 motivated and passionate engineers, scientists, and athletes.

The chart above shows the breakdown of our current members by department. This year, we introduced an application process for all new members. The team has an excellent retention rate, with only 2 students who joined at the start of the year dropping out, and all others still actively participating. We have approximately 10 additional team “members” who are faculty and industry advisors or specialty workers (i.e. Welders, CFD specialists, etc...). We expect to have 10 new student members by the end of the year, and are currently recruiting specifically from the Society of Women in Engineering (SWE), as well as the Computer Science & Engineering and Industrial & Systems Engineering departments.

The video below demonstrates what happens underwater during the races (also, shows you how dominant our team was last year).

2 Days Left!

Published on Monday, May. 2, 2016 at 09:45 PM (PST)

When we're not busy sending out emails and posting about our USEED on facebook, we're in the shop hard at work. At 9:00AM we started prepping it for painting and body work.

As for our campaign, we have 2 days left are really close to our 100% goal! If you've made a gift before, please consider giving again or sharing it to any friends that may be interested in our work. Also, let us know if you'd like to come say hello and check on our progress!

UW Human Powered Submarine

Almost 70% funded!

Published on Wednesday, Apr. 20, 2016 at 06:57 PM (PST)

Hello Family, Friends, Supports, and Supporters to-be!

In the first two weeks we've reached 70% of our overall goal! You're support and enthusiasm for our work has brought a fantastic energy to the team this month, and we've been harnessing that energy into building an amazing submarine!

Day 3 Coming to a Close! Future Team Leadership...

Published on Friday, Apr. 8, 2016 at 02:31 AM (PST)

We are thrilled with the response that we have gotten! We're only 3 days in and we're so close to our goal!

Outside of the fundraiser, we are working to determine the future leadership of the team for the 2016-2017 academic year. As team members begin to graduate and go off to further their education, work for some of our sponsors, etc. we need to find strong replacements. Luckily, one of the characteristics about our team is our ability to adapt year-to-year in structure to accommodate not just the needs of the team, but the leaders we have on it. It was actually somewhat difficult finding "replacements" for all the current leads because there were just too many good candidates, but that's a good thing! Stay tuned for those announcements!

As always, please help us spread the word by sharing this link with your friends and family: https://uw.useed.net/projects/389/home

Cheers!

Make an Impact

A Week's Worth of Coffee for the Lab

Give $10

Thanks for giving us a hand with some of our regular weekly expenditures. We're all about human power, and this is engineering fuel!

Roll of 3D Printing Filament

Give $25

The team rapid prototypes all components before they are manufactured and installed. This donation covers material costs for this important development phase.

Training and Testing Weekends

Give $50

The team regularly tows the submarine out to chilly Lake Crescent and Lake Chelan, whose clear waters are ideal for open-water testing. Your donation helps cover the cost of these valuable training trips and enables us to perform at our best for the competition.

Composite Materials for a Propeller Blade

Give $100

Each propeller blade we make uses a pre-impregnated carbon fiber and epoxy as well as consumables like mold release and gloves. Help cover the cost of these advanced construction techniques!

Control Servo

Give $250

Our electrical team designs their own custom printed circuit boards to drive the control planes. Every motor controller is carefully designed, assembled, and tested to ensure robust steering of the submarine.

Certify a Scientific Diver

Give $500

Our divers have to pay for their own specialized physical exams, SCUBA courses, and stay current with their First Aid/CPR/Oxygen Administration certifications.

Fly a Team Member to eISR

Give $1,000

19 students are flying to Gosport, England to break a world record... but first we need to buy some plane tickets.

Transport the Sub to eISR

Give $5,000

Would you mind donating five-thousand dollars to ship a submarine to England? We can't break that record without our newly optimized submarine!

Design a Submarine

Give $10,000

With this amount, you can help us design and implement innovative technology on our submarine. All excess funds will be put towards: the optimization of our two-person sub, parts, software, tools for manufacturing, and training for our athletes and scientific divers.
