STUDENT-POWERED, COMMUNITY-BASED MEDICINE

Graduation and giving! We’ve been thinking about graduation over the past few months, because we’re about to leave medical school and move on to the next part of our training. But we’ve also been thinking about gratitude, because we want to give something back to the UW School of Medicine.

Our goal is to raise money for something that means a great deal to students like us — service learning programs — and we’re asking you to join us. We are also thrilled to announce that Paul G. Ramsey, M.D., the dean of the UW School of Medicine, will match our class gift: up to $10,000!

What WWAMI stands for

Before we explain service learning, we should probably explain WWAMI, a five-state medical education program in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. It’s a collaboration among the UW School of Medicine and various universities and physicians. With this program, we can receive training in different states — and get a sense of how medicine is practiced in all sorts of settings, from big-city hospitals to rural clinics.

Service + learning: the heart and soul of medicine

Many of us enter school with a passion for providing service to underserved communities — and service learning is key. These programs give us, as students, the opportunity to take what we’ve learned in the classroom and use it to serve diverse communities throughout WWAMI, with patients who don’t have ready access to care.

Here are some samples of our service learning projects:

  • Diagnose-and-treat clinics at RotaCare in Seattle, Wash; Friendship Clinic in Boise, Idaho; Palouse Free Clinic in Pullman, Wash.; and House of Charity in Spokane, Wash.
  • Screen-and-refer clinics at Casa Latina, a center for undocumented Latino day laborers, and the Aloha Inn, transitional housing for the homeless in Seattle, Wash.
  • Pipeline projects coordinated by student groups associated with the School’s Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, dedicated to increasing diversity in health professions.
  • HIV testing in Bozeman, Mont., and Seattle, Wash.
  • Smoking cessation and basic health screenings for homeless people at Brother Francis Care Clinic in Anchorage, Alaska.
  • Diabetes education in Laramie, Wyo.
  • Health Equity Circle projects, which are focused on addressing social determinants of health in Spokane and Seattle, Wash.

Service learning is a two-way street. As we build relationships with patients through our visits, we provide them with medical care and other needs, and they give us the opportunity to get out of the classroom and broaden our horizons and goals.

Why do we need money for service learning?

Although the School’s service learning program is very supportive of our projects, the projects are underfunded. With your generous support, they’ll be able to:
  • Catalyze new projects in areas where service learning is less developed; and
  • Support and strengthen infrastructure for existing service learning projects across the WWAMI region.
Everyone benefits: the students who participate in the projects and the people and programs who need the medical services we provide.

How you can help — and get a match!

Our school encourages us to explore through service and to be of service our entire lives — in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho or wherever we go on to practice.

We invite you to help students throughout the WWAMI region to learn — and to make a real difference to the people and communities that need it most.

Please give today; early donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000, by the dean of the UW School of Medicine!

And if you’d like to be social, please return to the top of the page to help spread the word. Thank you for your support!

GQ SURVEY UPDATE

Published on Wednesday, May. 20, 2015 at 10:00 PM (PST)
CLASSMATES.

Less than 48 hours until graduation! Congratulations.  Since our launch, the monetary response has been AMAZING. We have raised $7130.00, which has surpassed our initial goal of $5000.00!

First, THANK YOU to all those who have donated or spread the word!

The Deans of our program have graciously offered to donate $1000.00, which will be matched by Dr. Ramsey—allowing our class to donate over $9000.00 to the Service Learning Department.  ALL we NEED to do is reach 76% COMPLETION rate of the GQ survey.

As of this morning, we only need 22 more students.
The survey is simple and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. PLEASE consider completing the survey! We each have to complete evaluations for Capstone—so find that old email (GQ) and help us reach 76%, because the additional $2000 will be VERY HELPFUL for service projects.

UWSOM has provided great opportunities for each of us and this is our chance to give back to the service learning department, which will continue to support current and future student-lead projects.

Thank you again for supporting the Senior Class Gift fundraising project.

We have surpassed our goal, thanks to all your support! However, with one week left, we are aiming to reach 100 supporters. Currently we have had 68 participants in this campaign and would love to see that number continue to grow in these last few weeks.

Service learning is all about team work, in which everyone matters! So please help us reach our newest goal! Once again, many thanks to everyone who has supported us thus far.
