Math-Science-Leadership Program

We believe that every student deserves a chance to become a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The UW Tacoma Math-Science-Leadership Program (MSL) empowers students in grades 7 through 12 with the preparation and skills they need to bridge the 64% gap between available positions in STEM fields and the U.S. workforce that is prepared to fill those jobs.  A team of UW Tacoma staff, program alumni, and families have come together for the next 30 days to support this campaign for the 2014-15 MSL Program.

MSL brings together 120 youth with students and faculty from UW Tacoma for community-building monthly events throughout the school year and an engaging three-week summer program. MSL develops supportive cohorts that build positive science-linked identities, academic strength, and leadership skills over a six year period.

94% of the youth we serve are underrepresented in the sciences (they qualify for free or reduced lunch, are potential first-generation college students, are racial and ethnic minorities, or are female).  This program is free for students and we are seeking donations to provide innovative STEM experiences for young people from underserved communities. Donations provide our students with: healthy food, STEM-related field trips and field research, and lab and classroom materials.   100% of your gift goes directly to the program!

The Math-Science-Leadership Program provides a supportive community and is a gateway for students to access college and STEM careers. The S.T.E.M. 4 All campaign champions are excited to support MSL because we have been a part of the program. MSL has helped students grow, prepared them for higher education, and helped them become better leaders in their communities.

There are very few options for low-income families to access high-quality STEM summer learning experiences in the South Puget Sound region.  You can support our youth by sharing our story with family and friends on social media, or by making a donation!  We have several levels of gifts you can support when you choose from the list on the right side of this page, showing examples of the kind of impact your gift will have. Your gift at any level helps our students!  By supporting our campaign, you can help ensure that diverse, bright local youth will spend the summer expanding their horizons and developing leadership skills that will build a better future for our communities, our state, and our world.

To learn more about what your gifts will support, check out what our students did last year, and read below about what past participants have said about MSL.

MSL Students
"I learned a lot about the kinds of research that goes into real scientific inquiries. I didn't know much about them before this."

"I learned that science is enjoyable."

"I am better at doing math, science, and leadership things than I thought."

"I have so many options ahead of me. I can make my future anything I want."

MSL Parent
“I really need to give you a "thank you" gift!  (My daughter) has taken your lessons and joined the "robotics club" at her brand new school! Even as her friends have advised her that it is "not cool" she doesn't care what they say and is so excited! That was you guys at MSL! Not only did she get excited about Robotics, she has the confidence to stand up for it and she even convinced one of the high school kids to join explaining that it is a fun direction toward a scholarship. Thank you so much!”

Half Way There!

Good evening,

(Above) Here is how students learn through MSL, help share about our STEM 4 ALL campaign to support fun learning adventures such as this!

Today, we hit 53%! Thank you all so much for your fantastic support! We are at halfway point now and we need to start thinking outside the box on how to spread the word. We can use pictures, videos, banners, and any other creative ways to get people to see us. Please let us know if you make any ideas or materials we can use and send it to the interns' email, msl.interns@gmail.com! Our program is also featured on UWT's homepage here under news http://www.tacoma.uw.edu/ so please check it out!

P.S Get the word out about our amazing campaign by sharing this tumblr post here http://sabrinabrentin.tumblr.com/post/88344649408/hey-my-name-is-sabrina-and-i-am-an-intern-at-the
