UW EcoCAR 3 Team
Welcome to Nick Armstrong's Personal Fundraising Page!
The UW EcoCAR needs new equipment, we need your help raising the funds
I've been on the UW EcoCAR team for close to a year working with electrical systems and the programming that controls them. In that time I've gained valuable work experience that will help me in my professional life. Not only that, the EcoCAR lab has served as almost a second home for me as I've spent so much time there doing work, homework, and spending time with my teammates.
I hope you will be kind enough to contribute a small amount to help the EcoCAR team get the equipment we need.
Help Support UW EcoCAR!
What is EcoCAR 3?
The EcoCAR 3 Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) is a 4-year long collegiate automotive engineering competition sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The UW EcoCAR team is just one of 16 university teams from both the U.S. and Canada. Each team has been challenged to redesign a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro into an electric hybrid vehicle, reducing its environmental impact while maximizing the output performance of the original vehicle. In May 2018, the UW team will travel to California to present to test our one of a kind hybrid Camaro during the final competition.
"It’s an incredible thing we have to do performance-wise to meet the targets of the competition, and there’s no such vehicle out there. This is what makes it an educational and engineering challenge for us. I’m confident we’ll be able to do it." - Brian Fabien, Associate Dean and EcoCAR Faculty Advisor
The Team
Our team is almost entirely student run, which means that the students are mostly responsible for a majority of the design, manufacturing, and testing processes – a massive technical and administrative feat. Over the course of the four-year competition, the team has drawn ideas from its faculty advisers and external industry advisers, using their direction and guidance for our research and development. In the last year of competition, the team has identified several key aspects of the program that require further funding.
Year Four Requirements
- Components and Parts
The UW team has the most technologically complex vehicle architecture and design of any in the competition. To finalize this project, our team still needs several critical components including sensors, cameras, and parts yet to be integrated.
- Hardware and Software Tools
The competition asks students to design and re-engineer the Camaro to showroom specifications over the course of four years. Doing so requires industry level hardware and software tools that allow us to gain experience working in a professional environment, extending the educational experience beyond the classroom.
- Community Outreach Campaign
In addition to our technical endeavors, the team runs a youth outreach campaign intended to inspire local high school students to pursue STEM education. The team also engages with the community by hosting and attending events in the Seattle area.
Support UW EcoCAR
UW EcoCAR represents the strength and ingenuity of the university’s esteemed engineering program. Our team draws off this to bringing the most technologically advanced car to the competition, but we still need help to get over the finish line. We aim to raise $15,000 dollars to fund our efforts during the last year of competition. You can support UW EcoCAR here on USEED and again online by liking our page on UW EcoCAR 3 on Facebook.
The UW EcoCAR team attended the competition wide Emissions Testing Event in Ohio this week where the car was tested at the Transportation Research Center. The team was able to test the car on a variety of different simulated drive cycles using the TRC dynamometer. This was a more precise alternative to testing our car on open roads and gave our team awesome opportunity to get data on our vehicle for drive cycles similar to what we will see in competition. Overall, the tests showed no issues with our vehicle operation or assembly, and helped us identify the ways we need to refine our car's emissions.
Entering the final week of our USEED campaign, our team is looking to make a final push to meet our funding goal of $15,000. We have successfully raised over $12,000 so far which puts us at 82% of our goal! Thank you to everyone who have gotten us this far by supporting our campaign! The team would like to thank Ahmad Dashtestani and Sylvie Troxel for their generous donations to our campaign as well. Both of them will have their names painted on the wall of EcoCAR lab later this week.
This week was a big and busy one for the UW EcoCAR team. Starting off the week, the car was shipped off to Ohio to ETE. A small group of student representatives have flown out to the event as well to represent the UW team. Earlier today at ETE, the car was cleared for testing following a successful safety inspection by competition representatives from GM and Argonne National Labs. In the next few days the car will undergo testing on a dynamometer, monitoring the vehicles emissions and energy consumption at the Transportation Research Center, a multi-year sponsor of the EcoCAR program.
This week also marked the anticipated arrival of our new radar which is slated to be integrated into the vehicle once the team returns from ETE. In other EcoCAR news, the outreach team spoke at Snohomish High School early today on the EcoCAR competition and the development of related hybrid vehicle technologies. Our team is looking forward to working with them again as well as other local high schools in the near future!
Our USEED campaign also exceeded $10,000 this week with 142 individual contributions at the time of this post! The team is now 70% of the way toward reaching our funding goal of $15,000 dollars and that much closer to seeing this project through to fruition. Thank you to all who have contributed to this program and shared our story with the community. We would also like to give a special thanks to EcoCAR alum Sylvie Troxel for her generous donation. We will post pictures of Sylvie's prize shortly over social media and here on the USEED page!
It is two weeks into our USEED campaign and we are half of the way toward reaching our funding goal! Our team has spent this past week repairing and putting miles on the car. In this stage of the competition the team's main objective is to test and refine the functionality of the car, and to integrating the remaining driver assistance systems. Thank you so much for helping our USEED campaign get off to a great start!
After only a few days of our USEED campaign, we are already one quarter of the way toward reaching our funding goal! The team is currently getting ready for Winter Vehicle Evaluation (WVE), making sure the car is operating smoothly before it is shipped out for testing. There is still a lot of work ahead for the team, but our steady progress in the garage and the support we have received from everyone in the EcoCAR community will continue to be instrumental to our success at WVE and the Final competition in May. Thank you!!
